Bryan Kerns

Fire Science Teacher, Dobyns-Bennett High School, Kingsport, Tenn., and 2024-25 Tennessee Teacher of the Year

While teaching math in 2018, Kerns launched a unique wildland firefighter training club that has evolved into a full Fire and Emergency Services program of study that offers three levels of fire science courses. Kerns’ innovative approach to fire education earned him the 2025 Tennessee Teacher of the Year award and the 2025 Tennessee Wildlife Federation Conservation Educator of the Year. Beyond the classroom, Kerns serves as president of the Bays Mountain Park Association Board and as a landscape lead for the Southern Blue Ridge Fire Learning Network.
