Knoxville News Sentinel's Humphrey on the Hill has posted that Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam may seek a waiver for the state from meeting federal No Child Left Behind requirements. Governor Haslam acknowledged a "very real possibility" that many Tennessee schools will not meet NCLB requirements in the upcoming school year. It is not yet clear whether Governor Haslam is committed to implementing additional reforms in exchange for the regulatory relief. For some background, U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan made headlines a few weeks ago when he stated that the U.S. Department of Education may offer waivers to states seeking regulatory relief from NCLB requirements if they would agree to adopting additional education policy reforms. Secretary Duncan has not yet released the complete details on how a waiver system would work and has received criticism from some U.S. House members. How do you feel about Tennessee requesting an NCLB waiver from the federal government? Post your thoughts in the comments.
