As a former classroom teacher, I know how powerful student data can be when making day-to-day decisions that support student achievement. From assessment results to attendance records to basic demographics, information about our students, when used effectively and strategically, is a crucial part of improving education at the local, state, and federal levels.
It is not enough to accept, however, that the use of student data is important. Students, parents, educators, policymakers, and members of the community must gain a better understanding of what constitutes student data, how it is used, how to keep it safe, and what steps need to be taken to maximize its effectiveness.
In this spirit, SCORE has produced At a Glance: Understanding Student Data Usage and Privacy Protections. This document provides a brief and clear overview of the issues surrounding student data in Tennessee and across the United States.
