McPheeter’s Bend Elementary, a 2013 SCORE Prize finalist, is at the heart of rural Church Hill. School leaders have set a tone of collaboration and family, asking parents, students, and teachers to sign agreements setting high expectations for all.
The school is characterized by activity—students using technology and manipulatives to practice what they learn, create deliverables that demonstrate mastery, and talking though difficult ideas with one another. By using data to drive every lesson plan, assessing students weekly, and using benchmark tests to identify students in need of intervention, McPheeter’s Bend Elementary showed exceptional TVAAS growth over the past three years and continues to raise the bar for learning in Hawkins County and across Tennessee.
