Tennessee K-12 and higher education should prioritize accelerating learning, closing college completion gaps, expanding high-quality charter schools, and preparing students for careers in 2022, the State Collaborative on Reforming Education (SCORE) says in a new report.
Tennessee arrived at its current education finance system 30 years ago, and the fundamental structure of the complex Basic Education Program formula has changed little since then. A new analysis from SCORE can help inform thinking and guide discussions about how to reorient the system toward students and supporting their individual learning needs.
Parents in Tennessee express concerns that students have fallen behind in their learning during the COVID-19 pandemic in a new poll of parents and voters commissioned by the State Collaborative on Reforming Education (SCORE). “We first saw concerns from parents and voters about the impact of COVID on learning in a poll last October, and those concerns have not eased now that a new school year has begun,” SCORE President and CEO David Mansouri said.

Building a strong, interconnected set of policies is essential to ensuring learners have on and off ramps for their educational to career journeys. Earlier this year, SCORE served on ExcelinEd’s Advisory Committee for Pathways Matter, a resource that outlines a continuum of 20 key policies that policymakers and systems leaders can use to think about what education to workforce policies exist in their state and what policies are necessary to create a robust learner continuum for all students.
